TEXT

Comprised of paintings and sketches by the artist Coşkun Demirok, the exhibition 'Approaches' is on view at Milli Reasürans Art Gallery from March 9 to April 2, 2011

Living in Germany since 1970's, Demirok is for the first time exhibiting in İstanbul. Coming from an architectural background, in his paintings Demirok aims to create a space in a given two dimensional surface. In Demirok's previous exhibitions, the spectator witnessed on the canvas, the continuum of existance in a dynamic that is created by the straight lines that push and drag each other as well as the traces of paint splashes.

The works in this exhibition were created while the artist was in residence in İstanbul. The artist aimed to approach his culture, language and most important "İstanbul".

These works are all an approach in order to establish a new dialogue with his homeland. The sketches which are also a part of the exhibition, show the take off of this exhibition while the intellectual background of these works were formed in Düsseldorf where the artist is currently based.

Including dyptics and tryptics, this exhibition is a site specific one, the whole being an installation.

An exhibition book accompanies the exhibition, prepared in Turkish, English and German, includes a text by Dr. Christine Vogt (Director, Ludwiggalerie Schloss Oberhausen).
