TEXT

A polymat is a man of renaissance in deed...He is an enlightened man, knowledged in many different fields and disciplines. Nowadays, it became

a name given to people who feel foreign to today's world and does'nt seem to be fulfilled by learning about one single topic, versatile people with multi talents and auto-didactic...Persons who reminds us one of those people of those times.

Today's information age doesn’t create a person like this nor does it shelter them. That kind of life style remained in the past so to say. In Turkey of 50-60 years ago, especially in Istanbul, the number of people who were making interesting works by combining their skills and knowledge and creating most of the time 'the first' of the things, were many in comparison with today. It was maybe Istanbul of those times -calmed down after the war, which relatively created the environment for those people of curiosity to advance their hobbies.

A desire to pave the way for remembering a life style, a course of conduct which got lost in the fussiness of today's desire for career and professionalism. To want to remember the 'old Istanbulit' type who put curiosity and troubleshooting first and whose concern for money was only 'to earn just for enough'...who would be quite strange to today's young people.

So, this was the point of departure for making a Sabit Karamani exhibition. Since Sabit Karamani is a true polymat who worked, produced and inquired in many different, yet related fields and also that he was able to make a life with the people of same nature since the 1950's. Through his makings, looking at the the way of living in an era in a city, looking at the circumstances in Istanbul, the innovations and the people around him and the atmosphere they created together, remembering them...is what thought to be the purpose of this exhibition.

Through Sabit Karamani's photography, his years of radio, advertising, industrial electronics and ceramics,

this exhibition is taking a glance at Istanbul in its time course from 40's until the end of 80's. While taking Karamani's life and works in its center, this exhibition touches the lives of other polymats, artists and men of technics.

Since Karamani stands in the middle ground of different groups who came together according to their unique interests, he comes out as the figure who keeps in his character the cultural memory of all of them

The name of the exhibition is 'Sabit knows!', a title inspired from his close circle, a title which reminds the meaning of his life style. They say that for him because, the curious Sabit Karamani understands every technical matter, always comes up with a solution to technical problems. Because everyone would consult him before doing anything technical. His room -thanks to his rich and colorful life, is a caotic mess but with an internal order , stuffed with 'things', which this 8-10 squaremeter in fact makes the exterior surface of such a life style. Thus, the materials exhibited are Karamani's own productions and at the same time the things he used in production process as well as the photographs of those times; and installation made up of art works, objects, technical equipments, tools, voice and image recordings, notebooks, notes and designs, aiming to re-make a picture of a humble life style which time-wise close to us yet so far in style-wise.
