TEXT

This exhibition brings together the works of a visual artist, Petra de Jong, and an architect, Aksel Çoruh. Both their works contain a strong reference to geometry. In this exhibition, geometry is illuminated from the perspective of two disciplines, and with respect to two different cultural backgrounds.

Dutch artist Petra de Jong and Ankara born Dutch architect are inventing their own geometry by retracing, modifying, and layering the patterns that inspire them. Each of them, pursue a desire to spatialise the shape-giving framework of their works.

The work of Petra de Jong investigates the application of geometry in the tradition of abstract Turkish tile patterns and attempts to weave these structures into a whole.

A simultaneity and vibration of forms and colours arise. The pattern offers the possibility to enlarge or reduce, accentuate certain forms, and to make modifications in both colours and dimensions.

In collages and drawings, Çoruh uses geometrical techniques to create images and spaces. His new series of work is based on photographs of details of buildings taken in Rotterdam and Ankara. These photographs are traced and simplified into abstract compositions. The tracings are then used as building plans for a series of imaginary cities that are represented into miniature models. This exhibition is sponsored by The Netherlands Foundation for Visual Arts, Design and Architecture, Mondrian Foundation, Stroom Den Haag.
