20th-Century Art and the Maeght Collection

The story of the Maeght family, which has built one of the most important collections of contemporary art for three generations, goes beyond mere collecting; it is an extraordinary story that has become synonymous with 20th-century art and even influenced its formation.

The Maeghts' 1946 exhibition "Black Is a Color," considered one of the most important exhibitions of contemporary art in Paris, will be held again fifty-two years later at the Milli Reasürans Art Gallery in Istanbul. Fifty-two years later, artists such as Bazine, Tapies, Ubac, Miro, Giacometti, Braque, Calder, Matisse, Chagall, Kuroda, and Chillida will be presented to Istanbul art lovers with their drawings, paintings, sculptures, and engravings.

In 1964, when André Malraux opened the Maeght Foundation building, he said: "There is definitely a spirit lingering here." Fifty-two years later, the same spirit will roam the Milli Reasürans Art Gallery in Istanbul. It will whisper something about 20th-century art and the artists whose works give meaning to this era.

The exhibition will be on view from December 17, 1998, to February 10, 1999.
