TEXT

Studying at the Department of Graphic Design at the State Applied Fine Arts Academy and currently working as an instructor at Marmara University Faculty of Fine Arts, Gürbüz Doğan Ekşioğlu engages in cartoon, illustration, poster, and object design.

Having been involved in cartoons since 1977, the artist has won a total of 64 awards, including 23 international ones. He has participated in numerous national and international group exhibitions and held nine solo exhibitions, one of which was in New York. His works have graced the cover of The New Yorker magazine five times, in 1992, 1993 (twice), 2003, and 2005. Particularly, his piece published in 2005 commemorating the anniversary of September 11 received praise. His works have been featured on the covers of various magazines, including Forbes (1995), Corporate Finance (1996) internationally, and Milliyet Sanat (2001 and 2004), Hürriyet Gösteri (1996), Güldiken (1998), and MediaCat (2006) domestically. His cartoons and illustrations have been published in The Atlantic Monthly, The New York Times, and numerous magazines worldwide. Ekşioğlu is also the recipient of the 1998 Sedat Simavi Visual Arts Award, published by UNESCO for two of his works.

The artist's works often blend a fairy-tale-like, fantastical atmosphere with realism, turning into a deep humor with metaphors created by the human dimension. Influenced by his work on September 11th, Susan Sontag noted that Ekşioğlu looks at humanity and the world with great subtlety and directness, achieving this "difficult task" through meticulous work and sincerity.

Gürbüz Doğan Ekşioğlu's exhibition can be viewed at the Milli Reasürans Art Gallery from February 7th to March 1st, 2008.
